Memorial Bridge: Restoring a Vital Connection for the Mid-Ohio Valley

For generations, the Memorial Bridge has connected Parkersburg, West Virginia, with Belpre, Ohio, serving as a critical transportation corridor for residents, businesses, and emergency services. Opened in 1955, the bridge became an essential part of daily life in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Over time, however, the aging structure required significant rehabilitation to remain safe, reliable, and operational for the decades ahead.

Recognizing both the importance of the bridge and the financial challenges facing the City, American Infrastructure Partners partnered with United Bridge Partners to support the bridge's rehabilitation and long-term operation. The approximately $50 million project modernized the structure, extended its expected service life by more than 50 years, and established a long-term maintenance plan designed to preserve this vital regional asset.

The project also provided meaningful benefits beyond the bridge itself. By transferring future maintenance responsibilities, the City of Parkersburg was able to retain approximately $11.8 million that had previously been reserved for bridge maintenance and potential demolition, making those resources available for other municipal priorities. During construction, the project supported local contractors and workers, while preserving an important transportation link for the surrounding region.

The rehabilitation was made possible through collaboration among public and private partners. Under the leadership of Mayor Tom Joyce, the City worked alongside United Bridge Partners and American Infrastructure Partners to preserve an asset that had served the community for decades while creating a sustainable path for its future. As Mayor Joyce noted during the project, maintaining the bridge was about more than infrastructure. It was about protecting a vital connection for the community.
